Our eyes had met, and I watched the last of the humor receding from Alex's. "You're not, I know," he said, answering for me, quietly. "You could never be. You're better at reading the compass within."

An intense feeling akin to personal heat was stealing over me, unavoidable in this closeness. I was too aware of it, too aware of him and all the nuances of expression we had been talking about before.

"You clearly should have read theology at your college, the way you once planned, with all that philosophy bottled inside you." I was trying to be lighthearted about it. If we were laughing, it would seem less intense between us.

"Thanks," he said, laughing. "I think."

It triggered laughter for me, too — but not because of one of Sidney's many abandoned goals. The thought of him in a vicar's collar crossed my mind, from the village children's party. We ended up in the dark together that time too, the recollection of it still retaining even the sharpness of one of the vicar's bookends I bumped in the library with my elbow.

"What?" he asked, softly.

"Being here like this — I can't help thinking of that time," I began. I was suddenly aware of the flame taking over my face for that October kiss, which kept me from finishing. I assumed he didn't remember, but when I looked up, the expression on his face made me think he was remembering something, too. Not the humorous part, however.

Our eyes lingered. I was reading too deeply, falling into those depths again, changing rapidly from the warm hazel to the fiery curiosity of green and gold I had known so well. Even in the dark, I knew it.

We were so close, maybe it was inevitable, the way he leaned down, and the way I tilted my face to meet him. I felt his lips touch mine, the soft brush of them like the one in my memory. I couldn't help mine kissing him back in return.

The touch strengthened, the gap between us shrinking. My hands moved up to cradle his face, feeling his hands sliding around my waist, drawing me close against him. The same mouth, the outline of a face so familiar I knew it instantly by physical contact. The hollow of the cheek beneath my thumb, the curvature of jaw to chin, the corners of those lips.

It wasn't the same as kissing him in the past, but everything about it made me want to keep on, even when we broke apart.

His arm closed around me, enfolding me against his torso. I felt confused and exhilarated, my face nestled in the hollow between his shoulder and neck. My pulse accelerated rapidly in the bliss of it, and I thought he had experienced the same. I could still feel the fast heartbeat within his chest, and the strokes of his breath were coming quick and light.

The collar of his shirt, the crisp fabric of his jacket, were unfamiliar sensations in this embrace, as was the scent of aftershave in my nostrils, reminding me of the spices from a cup of strong Earl Grey tea.
